       A RAINY DAY: an emergency. you must lay by something for the rainy day.

      DAY BY DAY:daily. prices are rising day by day.

      BROAD DAY LIGHT: full and complete any light. our house was
robbed in broad day light.

     CALL IT A DAY: to bring something to an end. i have not finished
this piece of work but iam so tired that i will have tocall it a day.

     CREATURE OF DAY: short lived. beauty is a creature of day.

      DEAL WITH:to trade with, to treat well. i will not deal with
this shop keeper at all.

     A RAW DEAL: bad treatment. the old man was left only the cottage-
raw deal for one who had worked so hard.

     DEAL IN : trade in. he deals in books.

DEATH
      HE WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME: he will cause my  death. he is so
mechievous with his mischief that he will be death of me.

      TO BE SICK UNTO DEATH : to have. he is now sick unto death.

      AT DEATH'S DOOR: about to death. i found him at death's door.

      CATCH ONE'S DEATH(OF COLD): ti get a very bad cold, if you go
out in that rain without coat you will catch your death(of cold).

      A DEATH TRAP: a place, biulding etc. in which one is in danger
of being killed or harmed. old buildings without fire escape are real
death traps.

     PUT TO DEATH: kill. the minister put his king to death.

DEEP
      IN DEEP WATER: in difficulties or trouble. he found himself in
deep water when he took over the management of the firm.

DEDUCTION
         MAKE A DEDUCTION:reduce by. i can make a deduction of five percent.

DEPEND
         DEPEND UPON IT:be certain.. depend upon  it, we shall win the match.

DEPTH
       IN DEPTH: deeply and thorougly. i have studies the subject in depth.

       OUT OF ONE'S DEPTH:  beyond one's faculties. itis difficult
problem and is out of my depth.

       DEPTH OF HEART: great sincerity. i speak from the depth of my heart.

DESIGN
       HAVE DESIGNS ON(SOMETHING): to be trying to get. he has design on my job.

DESIRE
        LEAVE A LOT TO BE DESIRED: not be very good. her cooking
leaves a lot to be desired.

DESPAIR
         DESPAIR OF:of gaining anything. he is despair of winning a scholarship.

DEVIL
         GIVE THE DEVIL HIS DUE: to be fair to someone one dislikes or
disaproves of. her husband is terribly bad tempered although, to give
the devil his due, he is always very pleasant to me.

         TO DEVIL AMONG: disturbance. i know there was the devil among
the gathering.

          THE DEVIL OF:unpleasant person. he is the devil of a clerk.

in the world.

         TO AGREE TO DIFFER: to give up an attempt to convince each
other. shastri and ayub agreed to differ.

DIFFERENCE
          SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE: halve the amount in dispute. you ask
six rupees, i offer four rupees; will you split the difference and
accept five.

          MAKE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: to distinguish one thing from
another. let us not make a difference between right and wrong.

         TAKE A DIM VIEW OF: to disapprove of. i take a dim view of
his attitude to his parents.

          DIP INTO: to look briefly at(a book) or to study in a casual
manner. ihave dipped into his book on shakespere, but i have not read
it right throgh.

         DIRT CHEAP:very cheap. she got that car dirt cheap.

         DIG IN:to make an energetic start on something , esp eating a

up old differences.

         TO DIG AT: to remark against. it does  not pay to dit at your elders.

DING-DONG
          DING-DONG: monotony; sameness. the life of a cleark is just
ding-dong.

          BY DINT OF : effort; usually continued. he succeeded in the
examination by dint of hard work.

DISPUTE
           BEYOND DISPUTE:certainly. is it a fact beyond dispute?
thathe is a good boy.

           DIVIDE BETWEEN: divide into part. pleas divide the orange
between the two children.

DISTANCE
           KEEP ONE'S DISTANCE:not to be too friendly; not to come too
close. he was very plesant to every one in the office, but he kept his
distance.

          BE DONE: to be at an end, to have done; finished. the
marriage is done.

          TO DO  IN THE EYE: to cheat. the quality of a thief lies in

completely to the dogs and spends all his time in the pub.

         LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE: avoid any action leading to
unnecessary fraction or trouble. we let sleeping dogs lie, and married
without asking your father's opinion.

         IN THE DOGS HOUSE: in disgrace. he forgot his wife's
birthday, so he is in the dog house.

         DOG OF WAR: havoc. the plague caused the dog of war.

         DOG'S AGE: a long time. we have not met a dog's age.

         A  DOG IN THE MANGER:a selfish fellow who will not allow
others to enjoy which he cannot avail. the people of the village
followed a dog in the manger policy and , therefore, there was no
progress.

         DOG SLEEP: light sleep. old men enjoy a dog sleep.

DONKEY
          DONKEY'S AGES/YEARS: very long time. i have not seen him in
donkey's ages.

          DONKEY WORK: hard; unrewarding part of any task. we know
have computer to do  the donkey work.

          TALK THE HIND LEG OFF A DONKEY: to talk a great deal and for
a long time. i like this little girl, but she would talk the hind leg
off a donkey.

DOOR
          NEXT DOOR TO : very near. he stay next door to my house.

          OUT OF DOORS: outside; not is a house. boys should play out of doors.

          AT DEATH'S DOOR: about to die. his father is at death's door
these days.

          TO SHOW A PERSON THE DOOR: order a person to leave permises.
mohan's behaviour was so insolent that i had to show him the door.

         ON(SOMEONE'S) DOORSTEP: very close to where(someone) lives.
the abu mountains are on our doorstep.

         SHOW(SOME ONE) THE DOOR: to make (someone) leave the house.
the landlord came round to try  to make us a pay extra rent, but my
husband soon showed him the door.

DOUBLE
         AT THE  DOUBLE: very quickly. he came up the road at the
double and rushed into the house.

         DOUBLE MIND: indecision. he is a man of double mind.

         DOUBLE DEALER: deceitful person. kapoor is a double dealer.

         DOUBLE QUICK: quickly. he dashed to the door, double quick,
but was tooo late to catch the thief.

DOUBT
         MAKE NO DOUBT:do what is necessary make certain. make no
doubt that the safe door is locked.

         BEYOND DOUBT: with absolute certainty.  the man is dead beyond a boubt.

DOWN
         DOWN AND OUT: at the end of one's resources. i was down and
out when he came to my help.

         GO DOWN WITH: be acceptable to. your goods will go down with the bride.

         DOWN TO THE GROUND: completely. the house was burnt down to the ground.

         TO GO DOWN: to decrease in value. sugar has gone down these days.

         PULL DOWN: to demolish. this house being very old should be
pulled down.

         TO TAKE DOWN: to write down. please take down class work.

         TO RUN DOWN: to speak against. it is not good to run down your friends.

         UP  AND DOWN: fluctuations. a man who has seen ups and downs
in his life can guide others well.

         TO BE DOWN: to be suffering from. i am down with fever.

DRAW
         DRAW UP: to compose due from, arrange in order. i draw up the
state of my affairs in writing.

         DRAW OFF: to lead away. the captain draw off his men.

         DRAW ON: approach; entice; allure. as the time drew on, alll
stood in readiness.

         DRAWN GAME:end in draw. the football match between india and
burma ended in draw.

        DRAW NEAR: come near; approach. draw near, i have news for you.

        DRAW BACK: to draw back. they draw back their petition.

        DRAW CUTS: draw lots. let us draw cuts to find winner.

        DRAW OUT: remove money from a bank or company. i drew out five
hundred rupees last week.

        WITHDRAWN FACE: sullen. he found me with a drown face.

DRINK
          DRINK IN:to absorb rain,etc. sand drank in the whole barrel of milk.

         TO DRINK HARD: to be given to drinking in excess. heis a hard drinker.

          TO DRINK UP: to finish by driniking. he has drunk up his
entire bank balance.

         DRINK OFF : to drink the whole at once.i drunk off bottle.

DRIVE
         DRIVE AWAY:depart, in a carriage. he must drive away in three minutes.

         DRIVE OUT: is to banish, to expel, to drive beyond a
boundary. drive out the sheep to the meadows.

         TO DRIVE HOME:to lay stree on.i took great pains in driving
home to home the evils of smoking.

DROP
         DROP IN: to arrive, informally to visit some one. do drop in
if you happen to be passing.

         DROP A LINE: send a short note. drop me a line when you are
next in the city.

         DROP OUT: cease to complete. five runners started , but two
soon dropped out.

         DROP  OFF: fallasleep. i closed my eyes and soon dropped off.

         DROP BY: to visit someone casually and without being invited
.i will drop by on my way home if i have time.

down in a boat.

         TO TAKE A DROP: to drink small quanity of liquor. let us take a drop.

DRUG
         DRUG IN THE MARKET:an unsaleable commodity. mangoes are drug
in the market during this session.

DRY
         DRY(SOMEONE) OUT:to cure or make better. he went to a nursing
home to be dried out.

         A DRY DEATH: death on land. shri nehru died a dry death.

         DRY FACTS:uninteresting. donot bore me with your dry facts.

         DRY UP:to  forget what to say, e.g in  a play. he dried up in
the middle of a scene.

         TO GO DRY: to be without lequor. calcutta has gone dry.

         DRY BEAT: a good beat but resulting into shedding of blood.
we gave a dry beat tothe theif.

         DRY AS DUST:dull. the picture was aboslutely dry as dust.

DUCK
         A LAME DUCK: a helpless or inefficient person. her house is
always full of lame ducks who need help.

         TO PLAY DUCKS AND DRAKES WITH : to squander. he played ducks
and draked with that handsome legacy and found himself forced to took
for work.

         DUCK DIAMOND: beloved.  i can give up everything for my duck.

DUST
        BITE THE DUST: to cease to exist, to be unsuccessful. that
another schme that's bitten the dust.

        TO THROW DUST IN ONE'S EYES:hoodwind; mislead. madan threw
dust inthe eyes of his friend  and robbed him to his property.

DUTY
       IN DUTY BOUND:compelled by a sense of duty. in duty bound he
went to see his father.

DUTCH
        DOUBLE  DUTCH:nonsense. i could not understand what he was
saying it was double dutch to me.

        DUTCH COURAGE: an artificial courage gained by drining
alcohol. he needed some duthc courage before asking her to marry him.

        GO DUTCH: to pay each for oneself. since neither had much
money, they always went dutch when they went out together.

        TALK LIKE A DUTCH UNCLE: to rebuke. please donot talk to me
like a dutch uncle.
