(idiom and phrases)E

EAR
      BE ALL EARS: to listen with keen attention. the children were
all ears when their father was descrining the car crash.

     FALL ON DEAF EARS: not to be listened to . his advice fell on deaf ears.

     UP TO ONE'S EARS:(in) deeply involved(in). iam up  to my ears in
work. he is up to his ears in trouble/debt.

     LEND AN EAR TO LISTEN: if you will all lend an ear; i shall
explain the arrangementsw for our staff outing.

     TO HAVE AN EAR FOR: to have liking for. i have an ear for
instrumental music.

     BY EAR: without any technical knowledge. he plays the piano
entirely by ear.

     TURN A DEAF EAR: refuse to listen. the uncle drunkard turned a
deaf ear to all advice.

     OVER HEAD AND  EAR: deeply immersed. my uncle is over head and ear in debt.

    TO HAVE A PERSON'S EARS: to create a favourable impression. she
has the king's ears.

    PLAY(SOMETHING) BY EAR: to play without using printed music. they
asked him to play the piano at the party, but he could not play by ear
and he had no music with him.

    SET(SOMEONE) BY THE EARS : to cause troble between or among( two
or more people). they got on well enough together until the question
of promotion set them all by the ears.

EARLY
        AN EARLY BIRD: a person  who gains advantage by acting more
promptly than others. you have to be an early bird if you want to get
bargain at an auction sale.

        TO KEEP EARLY HOUR: to rise and go to bed early. to keep early
hour is good habit.

        EARLY AND LATE: at all times. hyou are  most welcome to visit
me early and late.

        AT YOUR EARLY CONVENIENCE: as soon as you conveniently can.
please reply me to this letter at your only convenience.

        IT'S EARLY DAYS: it is soon to know, have results etc. our new
manager seems to be very efficient , but it is early days yet.

EARTH
        ON EARTH: signifying wonder or enquiry. what on the earth are
you doing.

        GO TO EARTH: disappear from the place in which one usually
seen  or hunting . aline goes to earth.

        COST,PAY THE EARTH: to cost, pay a great deal of money. eating
in hotels cots the earth.

        LIKE NOTHING ON EARTH: extremely ill,untidy etc. you look like
nothing on earth in that dress.

EASY
        EASY MONEY: bribe. he makes a lot of easy money in the office.

        EASIER SAID THAN DONE: more difficult to do than it sounds.
getting seats for the theatreis easier than done.

       EASY ON THE EYE: not to make things difficult for. go easy on
her she is very young.

       GO EASY ON:not to make things difficult for . go easy on her
she is very young.

      EASY CIRCUMSTANCES: affluence. she is a woman of easy circumstances.

     EASY HONOURS: honours evenly divided. the battle was a gameof
easy honours.

      TAKE IT EASY: relax, take in the calmy. it is no use getting so
excited, you had better take it easy.

     EASY AND FREE: not strict. our mangeris easy and free.

     EASY MANNERS: amiability. you are a man of easy manners.

    EASY VIRTUE: loose character. the girl in question of easy virtue.

EAT
     EAT INTO: is to enter by corrsion. rust eats into iron . what is
eating you? what is bothring

    TO EAT ONE'S WORDS: to back out. she promised to help me, but she
ate his words.

   EAT ONE'S HEART OUT: grieve continuously. he is eating his heart
out because sita never writes.

   EAT OUT: to finish eatables. let us eat out the break fast.

   EAT OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME:  eat so much . that girl will eat out of
house and home.

  TO EAT HUMBLE PIE:  to apologise. having failed in his case, he had
to eat that humble pie.

  EAT AWAY: destroy gradually. her health was eaten away.

   EAT UP:  absord; consume; devour completely. do not be eaten up
with your studies.

EDGE
     ON EDGE: in a state of nervous tension. they were all on edge to
know the news.

     TO SET TEETH ON EDGE:to jar one's nervous. his action has set my
teeth on edge.

     EDGE OUT:  to remove or get rid of gradually. i feel that out new
chairman is trying to edge out these committee memebers who disagreee
with them.

     TO TAKE THE EDGE OF: to make blunt, ineffective. you are taking
the edge off your argument.

EFFECT
      LEAVE NO EFFECTS: to die without property. i hope to leave no effects.

      TO GIVE EFFECT: to make operative. please you must give effect
to my order.

      TAKE EFFECT: operate, function. the medicine will soon take effect.

     GENERAL EFFECT: effect made as a whole. what is the general
effect to your commitments.

     IN EFFECT: in truth; in reality. in effect,gandhiji was the supreme.

EGG
       BAD EGG: a worthless fellow. you must admit that madan is a bed egg.

       GOOD EGG: excellent person or scheme. the five year plan is good eggs.

      AS SURE AS EGGS: undoubtedly. i must meet you as sure as eggs.

    PUT ALL ONE'S EGGS IN ONE BASKET:  invest all one's capital
financial . he is put all his eggs in one basket, and bought on shop.

     EGG ON: to urge on. he egged on his friend to steal the radio.

    KEEP EGG ON ONE'S FACE: to be left  looking foolish. if i hold a
party and noone turns up. i will have egg on my face, will not i?

    IN THE EFF: in an early stage. out social reforms are still in the egg.

EIGHT
        A FIGURE OF EIGHT: a pattern; movement inthe shape of the
figure. the skater did a series of figures of eight.

       ONE OVER THE EIGHT:  one drink too many. by the way he was
taking, i suspected that he had one over the eight.

ELBOW
        ELBOW-ROOM:just enough room, space in kwhich to move. get out
of my way and give me some elbow-room!

        UP TO THE ELBOW: completely engrossed. he is up to the elbow
in his studies.

        OUT AT THE ELBOW:  ragged; shabby; worn out. for the last two
years he has been out at elbow.

        ELBOW-GREASE: hardwork; energy. if you use a bit of
elbowgrease you will get that floor clean.

        AT ONE'S ELBOW: close at hand. she kept ample money at her elbow.

ELEMENT
         TO BE IN ONE'S ELEMENTS: to be in an agreeable work or
company. a clerk cannot be in his element in a marchant's office.

        OUT OF ELEMENTS: means natural happiness. shakuntla was out of
elements during the marriage.

        FOUR ELEMENTS: water, air, fire, earth. life is made of the
four elements.

ELEPHANT
        A WHITE ELEPHANT:something which is useless  and a nuisance.
that enormous wardrobe your mother gave us has been nothing but a
white elephant.

ELEVEN
        AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR: at the last moment.he submitted his
application to the manager at the eleventh hour. the crew were reduced
at the eleventh hour.

ELF
        ELF-LOCK: a tangled lock of hair. his wife has an elegant elf-lock.

EMBARK
        EMBARK IN: embark on board a vessed, embark new business. this
is a kind of business i would not embark my capital in.

EMPLOY
        IN THE EMPLOY OF: employed by. he is in the employ of d.a.v.
college, ambala.

END
      AT ONE'S WIT'S END: confused and perplexed. my younger son is
very careless and, therefore,i am at my wit's end for his education.

      TO NO END: without any result. all his plans are tono end. i am
at my wit's end i donot know what to do now in this matter.

      AT A LOOSE END: with nothing to do. millions in india are at a loose end.

      TO END IN SMOKE: to come to nothing. all of his efforts ended in smoke.

      WORLD WITHOUT END: for ever. we wanted the world without end.

      NO END: very much; limitless. there was no end to god's mercy.

      AT LOOSE ENDS: in disorder. when the teacher entered the class
room , it was at loose ends.

      PLACE ON ENDS: upright. place the magazine on end.

     END UP:  conclude. let us end up this story.

     MAKE BOTH ENDS MEET: make one's income enough for one's expenses.
he cannot make both ends meet on his salary.

    TO THE BITTER END: to the extreme end, whatever may happen. he
shall  be faithfull to the bitter end.

     TO BE THE END OF: to cause the death of. the mischievour boy be
the end of his father.

    COME TO AN END:become exhausted. all my plans have come to an end.

    END FOR END: with the positon of the  ends reversed. ramesh  and
yogesh are end for end in the hearts of the people.

   ODDS AND ENDS:miscellaneous things. he old me about the odds and
ends of his  business.

   ON END: errect at a stretch. i can live without food  and water for
two days on end.

    PLACE ON ENDS: to find purpose . you must work hard to gain ends.

ENEMY
    HOW GOES THE ENEMY: how is the time; what time is it? the last
enemy awaits his return.

ENGLISH
        ENGLISH: language. english is a wonderful language.

ENOUGH
         ENOUGH AND TO SPARE: ample; more than is needed. five years
of carpet will be enough and to spare.

ENQUIRY
          IN THE COURSE OF ENQUIRY: during an investigation; while
enquiries were being made. in the course of an enquiry, it was
discovered that he had never been in the police.

ENTER
         ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT: agree; undertake. the firm will
enter into  an agreement to supply ten thousand pair of shoes.

         ENTER UP:  complete the account. please enter up the cash book.

         ENTER INTO: engage;occupy oneself with. i cannot enter into
details at present.

        TO ENTER A PROTEST: record it. you entered your protest iin
the complaint book.

        ENTER UPON: to begin. when he is entering upon his business.

ERRAND
        A FOOL'S ERRAND: a useless journey. i come to help him, but i
can see that it was a fool's errand- he has no need of my assistance.

        RUN ERRANDS: to do jobs. he runs errands for his mother.

        MAKE AN ERRAND:  invent a reason for going. you can always
make an errand for going home.

        TO GO AN ERRAND: to go with a message. he went on an errand to
the governor.

ERROR
         WRIT OF ERROR: reversal of judgement. we secured a writ error
froom the high court.

EVEN
         BREAK EVEN: to make neither profit nor loss. i spent rs
10,000/- and made rs10,000/- so overall i broke even.

         EVEN MONEY: a situation in which either ot two possibilities
is equally likely. it is even money whether he will be made home
secretary or chancellor of the exchaquer.

         GET EVEN WITH: to be revenged on. he tricked me, but i will
get even with him.

         HAVE AN EVEN CHANCE: to be equally; to be successful or
unsuccessfull. we have an even chance of successful.

EVENT
         IN THE EVENT OF: if a specified event should take place. in
the event of fire, please ring the alarm.

         AT ALL EVENTS: under all circumstances.at all events, i
shalll apear at the examination.at all costs. he will go there at
events.

        IN ANY EVENTS: whatever may happen. in any event i shall go tomorrrow.

         IN THE EVENT: in the end; as it happens. in the event i did
not need togo to hospital.

EVENING
         MUSICAL EVENING: evening spent in music. musical evening are
becoming rare these days.

        THE EVENING OF LIFE: old age. my mother is now in the evening.

        THE EVENING STAR: decline. it is now the evening star of her.

EVER
        EVER AND ANON: now and then. please write me a letter about
your welfare even and anon.

        EVER GREEN: always green; always fresh. beauty is always evergreen.

        FOR EVER AND EVER: for all future time. i shall lover her ever and ever.

        FOR EVER: to all eternity. i am yours for every my dear.

        THE EVER LASTING:  god. the everlasting knows better.

        EVER SO:  to any extent. he will do for her anything ever so.

EVERY
        EVERY WHITE: the whole ;quite. he worked hard every white.

        EVERY HERE AND THERE: all over; dispersedly. you find flowers
in mumbai every here and there.

papu was his eve lamb.

EXAMPLE
      WITHOUT EXAMPLE: beyond imitation. your career is without example.

      TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE:  to punish. the teacher should make an example of raj.

      TAKE EXAMPLE:  copy. please take an example by following ram.

      SET AN EXAMPLE:  to act in such (good) way that others will copy
one's behaviour. teachers must set thier pupils as good example.

EXCEPTION
       EXCEPTION PROVES THE RULE: the fact than an exception has to be
made for a particular example of something proves that there is a
general rule. i know that what i have said does not apply to brian,
but i think in his case the exception proves the rule.

       TAKE EXCEPTION TO : to object to or take offence at. the old
lady took exception to the rudeness ofthe children.

EXCESS
       CARRY TO EXCESS: to do too much. donot carry even good ideas to excess.

       IN THE EXCESS OF : more than . you have money in excess of what you need.

EXHIBITION
        MAKE AN EXHIBITION OF ONESELF: to behave foolishly in public.
the little girl made an exhibition of herself  by screaming loudly at
her mother.

EXCHANGE
        IN EXCHANGE: transaction. will you please exchange pen with my book.

EXPECT
        BE EXPECTING: to be pregnant. his wife is expecting again.

EXPENSE
         AT THE EXPENSE OF:  causing harm, embarassment. she persued
her ambitions at the expense of her marriage.
EXPRESS
         EXPRESS DELIVERY: a letter for early delivery. please reply
me soon by express delivery letter.

EXTREME
        IN THE EXTREME:in the last; highest degree; extremely. in
srinagar  winter is cold in the extreme.

        GO TO THE EXTREME: to go too far; to use extreme measures.the
goverment dares not to go to the extreme against mohan.

EYE
       ALL MY EYE:simply not true. he tole me how sorry they were that
they were unable to help, but that was all my eye.

       UP TO THE EYE: deeply. i was down in water upto the eyes.

       EYE WITNESS: one who actually sees an incident. according to an
eye witness,it was the motor-driver's fault.

       CATCH EYE: to make notice one. we wanted the bill  for our
meal, but i could not  catch the waiter's eye.

       CLAP/LAY/SET EYES ON: to see for the first time. i wish i would
never laid her eyes on her.

       CLOSE ONE'S EYS TO: to ignore something. she closed her eye to
her children's misbehaviour.

       CRY ONE'S EYE OUT: to weep bitterly. she cried her eyes out
when he married someone else.

       SEE EYE TO EYE: agree; regard inthe same way. i hope we shall
see eye to eye in this matter.

       AN EYE OPENER: something which reveals an unexpected fact. our
visit to their office was a real eye-opener- they are so inefficient.

      EYE WASH: deciet. i hope that all his sympathy for me was merely
an eye wash.

      TO KEEP AN EYE ON: to watch over. please keep an eye on my
luggage until i come back.

      MAKE EYES AT: look amorously. some students make eyes at girl students.

right street-keep your eyes skinned for a house  with a red front
dooor.

    NOT A BAT AN EYELID: to appear; to feel no surprise, distress. he
didnot bat an eyelid when i told him he was socked.

   ONE IN THE EYE(FOR): a direct rejection or refusal(for). the man's
decision to accept the pay offer was one in the eye for the militants
who had wanted them to strike.

    SEE WITH HALF AN EYE: to see without difficulty. anyone could have
seen with half an eye that she was upset.

    TURN A BLIND EYE: to pretend not to see or notice. because he
works so hard, his boss turns a blind eye  when he comes in late.

    WITH AN EYE TO : with as an aim. he always worked with an eye to promotion.

   WITH ONE'S EYES OPEN: with full awareness of what one is doing. i
knew what the job would involve- i went into it with my eyes open.

  UNDER THE EYE OF:under the observation of. the boy was brought up
under the eye of his mother.

  THROW SHEEP'S EYES AT: ogle sheepishly. she throw sheep's eyes at her lover.

  MIND YOUR EYE: take care. mind your eye lest you may cause an accident.
