(IDIOM AND PHRASE)N

NAIL
     ON THE NAIL :immediately. he makes payment on the nail.

     AS HARD AS NAILS :in fine training. our soldiers are hard as nails.

     A NAIL IN COFFIN : something which is very bad for health. every
cigarette you smoke is another nail in your coffin.

     HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD : to be absolutely accurate description
of something or someone, in an estimate of something. you hit the
nair(right) on the head when you described her as being naive.

NAME
      NAME AFTER : give the name as. i was name after my father.

      IN THE NAME OF GOODNESS : for the sake of goodness. please do
this work in the name of goodness.

      NAME  IS MUD :one is ine trouble; a person is blamed or no
longer liked . if you tell your mother i spilled ink on her rug, my
name will be mud.

      GIVE A BAD NAME : to cause harm to the reputation of. this mix
up is the kind of thing that gives our firm a bad name.

      IN THE NAME OF : by the authority of. i arrest you in the name of the king

      MAKE A NAME FOR ONESELF : to become famous. he made a name for
himself as the first mane to step on the moon.

      TO ONE'S NAME : owned by one or in  one possession. he has not a

      TO PUT ONE'S NAME DOWN FOR : to apply as a candidate. he has put
his name down for the post of a store keeper.

      TO CALL NAMES : abuse, do not call any body names.

NARROW
       A NARROW MARGIN :very little. he passed the examination by a
narrow margin.

       A NARROW ESCAPE : to escape with the slighest margin. he had a
narrow escape.

       A NARROW-MINDED : unwilling to accept idead different fro one's
won. he is so narrow minded that he disapproves of all young people.

NATURE
         THE CALL OF NATURE  : the need to go to the lavatory. i must
answer the call of nature before i leave the house.

NEAR
          A NEAR MISS :something unpleasant that very nearly happened.
that was a near miss-that bus very nearly hit the cyclist.

          A NEAR THING : something which comes close to failing. we
just managed to catch the train but it was a near thing.

          ONE'S NEAREST AND DEAREST : one,s immediate family. he liked
to spend the weekends with his nearest and dearest.

          NEAR BY :close by adjacent. my house is near by the railway.

         FAR AND NEAR : everywhere. god exists far and wide.

          AS NEAR AS DAMMIT : very nearly. our jumble sale raised
rs1000/ as near as dammit.

NECESSARY
           NECESSARY FOR :food is most necessary for life.

NECESSITY
           UNDER THE NECESSITY : compelled. he is under the necessity
of selling his car.

          OFF NECESSITY : necessarily. he become a thief of necessity.

NECK
           NECK OR NOTHING :expression used to show that someone is
willing to risk everything. i am risking all my money on the success
of this invention; if it fails i am ruined; its neck or nothing.

           NECK AND NECK :racing side by side;level. the horses ran
neck and neck.

           NECK AND CROP :headlong. i will throw you out of the house
neck and crop.

NEEDFUL
           DO THE NEEDFUL :do what is necessary. she wants a taxi.will
you do the needful.

NEGATIVE
           IN THE NEGATIVE : no. i asked him if his brother was at
home, he answered in the negative.

NEIGHBOUR
            IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF  : approximately. there must have
been in the neighbourhood of five hundred people there.

NELLIE
            NOT ON YOUR NELLIE :certainly not."would you ask your boss
if we could have a pay-rise." not on your nellie.

NERVE
            HAS NERVES OF STEEL :is not easily upset. nehruji had
nerves of steel.

            GET ON ONE'S NERVESS : irritate by the repetition of some
annyoing action. his continual sniffing gets on my nerves.

            A BAG OF NERVES :a very flexible, anxious, easily
frightened person. monica cannot work under pressure- she is just  a
bag of nerves

            HAVE A NERVE :to shoe rudeness. he has a nerve coming in
her and telling me to make him a cup of tea!

NEST
            A NEST-EGG : something saved up for the future. i have a
nest-egg in the bank.

NEVER
            NEVER MIND :do not trouble about it." what about money"?

            NEVER SAY DIE :determined. it was his never-say-die spirit
which took him to the top of mountain.

            ON THE NEVER-NEVER : by hire purchase. they bought a new

              NEW BROOM SWEEPS CLEAN :a new person makes nany changes.
the new superintendent has changes many of the school rules. a new
broom sweeps clean.

              NEW WORLD :america. columbus discovered the new world.

              TO TURN OVER A NEW LEAF : to lead a new life. sardar
patel turned over a new leaf  at the age.

              NEW PERSON : a person who become very much better. diet
and excercise made a new person.

NEWS
             BREAK THE NEWS :to tell about something,usually something
unpleasant, that has happened. i had to break the news of her
daughter's death.

              BE NEWS TO :to be a fact etc. not proviously known to.
it may be true that rakesh is married, but it is certainly news to me!

NEXT
             NEXT DOOR TO  :very nearly. his statement are next door to lying.

             HIS NEXT :his wife. his next was a clerk.

             HER NEXT :husband. her next was a bookseller.

             NEXT OF KIN : nearest relative. she is my next of kin.

             NEXT TO NOTHING : almost nothing. we had a lot of cakes
to sell when the sale began, but there's next to nothing left now.

NICK
             IN THE NICK OF TIME :just in time. the police arrive in
the neck of time.

             IN GOOD NICK : in good condition. this car's in very good nick.

NIGHT
             DAY AND NIGHT : at all hours. he is thinking day and night.

             A NIGHT CAP : a drink taken just before going to bed at
night. will you have a glass of whisky as a night cap.

             A NIGHT OWL :a person who is in the habit of staying up
late ate night. neena is night owl- she never goes to bed  before2
a.m.

NINE
             NINE DAY'S WONDER :something which everybody talk about
for a short time. the fact that the new doctor was nine day's wonder
in the village.

NIP
             NIP AND TUCK :evenly matched; hard fought to the finish.
the game was nip and tuck until the last minute.

             TO NIP IN THE BUD : to destroy before it develops. a bad
habits can best be nipped in the bud.

NO
             NO GO :unsuccessful;useless;not getting agreement or
approval. i asked if he would agree to out plans, but itis go, iam
afraid.

             NO WAY :certainly not; under no circumstaces. she was
looking for an invitation, but no way was i inviting her!

             NO END :almost without stopping; continually. the baby
cried no end.

NOSE
             NOSE IN : prying or pestering interest in. he always had
nose in other people business.

             UNDER ONE'S NOSE : a near and obvioius place. the dog
stole the fish from under my nose.

             TURN UP ONE'S NOSE AT :sneer at;scorn. he turned up his
nose at a seat in the gallery these days.

             PLAN AS THE NOSE IN YOUR FACE :easily seen. your duty is
plan as the nose in your face.

             TO COUNT NOSES :to count supporters.  let us count the

in the least afraid.

              NOT BAD : pretty good; all right; goog enough. the party
last night was not bad.

              FOR NOTHING :uselessly. i did all that work for nothing.

nothing like as good as his brother at brother at sports.

not very interesting or unsusal. i donot see why she is so attracted
to him; he is really nothig to write home about.

never be successful. i have invested everything i own in this new

              NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS :one success leads to
another. his brilliant performance as a footballer led to his being
given a good job in television ; nothing succeds like success.

              TO HAVE NOTHING : to be without individuality. she has
nothing in her.

              COME TO NOTHING: turn out useless. all his schemes has
come to nothing.

NOTICE
              AT SHORT NOTICE :at the end of an unexpectedly short
period. we have to leave for bombay at short notice.

              IN A NUTSHELL : stated very briefly. in a nutshell we
are getting married tomorrow.

              THE NUTS AND BOLTS : the basic facts or important
practical details about something. after five year as sales manager he
is very familiar with nuts and bolts of export marketing.

              A HARD NUT TO CRACK : a difficult problem. finding the
money to launch our new firm will be a hard nut to crack.

              NUTS ON :extremely fond of; very interested in. he is
nuts on old cars; he is collected about dozen of them.
